Fraction Calculator

Add, subtract, multiply or divide two fractions.

Calculate your result

Enter your values and select Calculate now.

Working with fractions

Fractions represent a numerator divided by a nonzero denominator. Use common denominators to add or subtract, or multiply numerators and denominators for multiplication.

Worked example

Example: 1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6. The calculator simplifies the result using the greatest common divisor.

Assumptions and limitations

Fraction denominators must not be zero. Enter whole numbers for numerators and denominators.

How to use this calculator

Enter the requested values, check the units, and press Calculate now. Adjust one input at a time to compare scenarios. The result updates only when you press the button again.

How fraction arithmetic works

For addition, a/b + c/d = (ad + bc)/bd. For subtraction, use (ad − bc)/bd. For multiplication, use ac/bd. For division, use ad/bc, provided c is not zero. Results are reduced using the greatest common divisor.

Frequently asked questions

Why are denominators not allowed to be zero?

A fraction with a zero denominator is undefined. Division by a zero-valued fraction is also undefined.

Can I use this calculator for free?

Yes. CalcTrustHub calculators are free to use and do not require an account. Results are estimates based on your inputs.

Why simplifying fractions works

Fractions are equivalent when numerator and denominator are multiplied or divided by the same nonzero integer. For addition and subtraction, use a common denominator first. For multiplication, multiply numerators and denominators. For division, multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction.

Can I enter decimal numbers?

No. This calculator is designed for integer numerators and denominators so that simplified results remain exact.
