How a discount is calculated

A percentage discount reduces the original price by a fraction of that price. Multiply the original price by (1 − discount rate ÷ 100) to find the sale price.

Worked example

An item priced at $120 with a 25% discount costs $90. You save $30.

Assumptions and limitations

Discounts may be limited by retailer rules, coupons, minimum purchase requirements and local tax treatment. Check the final checkout price.

Frequently asked questions

How do two discounts work?

A second discount applies to the already-reduced price, not the original price. For example, 20% off followed by 10% off is a total reduction of 28%, not 30%.

Does this include sales tax?

No. Discounts are calculated before any applicable tax. Use our Sales Tax Calculator to estimate the final checkout total.
